BMW, Nissan Helping to Set Up Nationwide EV Public-Charging Network (But It Isn’t Like Tesla’s)
Since only a relative pittance of electric vehicles have been sold in the U.S. to date, forgive us if we assume you don’t own one. Working off of that assumption, let us illuminate a particularly frustrating aspect of EV ownership: Charging. We’re not talking about most EVs’ short driving range; rather, it is the financial transaction involved that can annoy. If the charger isn’t free—you can stop reading now, Tesla owners, unless you want to feel fulfilled—it most likely falls under one of several “networks,” each with its own frequent-user access card and attendant account. BMW, Nissan, and a conglomerate of these access-card providers are banding together to change that, forming the ROEV Association to consolidate access to the various charging networks already out there.
-You may be wondering why this matters, especially when most not-free public EV chargers still offer out-of-network customers ways to pay with a credit card. Well, that can be frustrating, and even finding out-of-network chargers can be hard. This is what BMW has to say about the matter:
-“Currently, to access all 19,000 public, networked EV charging ports in the U.S., drivers may have accounts with numerous EV charging networks, carry multiple access cards, and use a variety of mobile apps to find stations. Particularly for unplanned charging, this may mean additional time and inconvenience for the drivers of the more than 380,000 EVs sold in the United States to date.”

The goal with the new network, which blankets 91 percent of public networked EV charging, is to enable “interoperability” between networks. (The new network is not, as some may think, a collection of superfast chargers to rival Tesla’s Supercharger network, with which only Tesla vehicles are compatible.) This will allow EV owners to keep their current charge account—provided it’s among those incorporated into ROEV—and use it at any participating charging station. So far, ROEV has expanded to include Audi, Honda, and several regional power companies. You may not own an EV now, but if you do take the leap, you’ll be able to juice up with more streamlined access to public chargers.

2016 Prius C Adds Safety Stuff, Special Edition It Likens to “Customized Exotics”
-Fresh from its 2015 model update, the Toyota Prius C gets two minor enhancements for 2016. The most significant is something you may not be able to see, but it’ll see you. The Prius C is the latest Toyota model to be offered with Toyota’s Safety Sense-C system, which includes a low-speed pre-collision system, lane-departure assist, and automatic high beams. The system comes as part of the Deluxe Moonroof and Safety package on the Prius C Three trim level, and is included in the Upgraded Wheel and Safety package on the Prius C Four.
More obvious to the naked eye (which may wish it was shielded when it sees it) is the new “Persona Series” limited-edition model. Taking a page from the Scion Release Series playbook, Toyota is offering a limited, 1500-car run of black Prius C models with black wheels and “electric lime” or “cherry pearl” accents for the lower grille, headlight lowers, mirror caps (interior and exterior), and beneath the windows—basically the automotive equivalent of lipstick, eyeliner, and trendy sunglasses. Toyota has a different take on it, according to the press release: “You may have seen such paint schemes on customized exotics driven by pro ballplayers, but the effect costs far less on a 2016 Prius C Special Edition.”

Diff Definitions: Each Type of Automotive Differential Explained

-Open Differential
--What It Does
-Splits engine torque into two outputs, each of which is able to rotate at a different speed.
Shortcomings
-When one tire loses traction, the opposing tire also experiences a torque reduction. In the worst case, your car is stuck with one wheel freely spinning while the tire with better traction can’t deliver enough torque to budge the vehicle. Modern traction-control systems compensate by applying the brakes (and thus a reaction torque) to the slipping wheel. That said, a more sophisticated diff is generally quicker-acting and more effective than this type.
Found In
-Anything without the pretense of performance or off-road ability—family sedans, crossovers, minivans, economy cars, etc.
Locking Differential
--What It Does
-With the diff locked, the connected wheels always spin at equal speeds. In sand, mud, and snow, a locked differential ensures that torque continues to flow to the wheel with higher traction.
Shortcomings
-Behaves like an open differential when not locked. Locking the diff on a high-grip surface such as dry pavement makes it difficult to turn the vehicle and can grenade the driveline.

-Jeep Wrangler, Mercedes-Benz G-class, Ram 2500 Power Wagon; optional on most full-size trucks.
Limited-slip Differential
--What It Does
-A limited-slip differential marries the concepts of open and locked diffs, working like an open differential the majority of the time, then automatically beginning to lock as slip occurs. Lock-up can be achieved via a viscous fluid, a clutch pack, or a complex geartrain.
Shortcomings
-Purely mechanical limited-slip diffs are reactive. That is, they don’t begin to lock up until after wheelslip has occurred.

Electronically Controlled Limited-slip Differential
--What It Does
-An electronically controlled clutch pack offers rheostatlike control between open and fully locked behaviors, with adjustments made hundreds of times per second. For example, if the computer determines there’s too much oversteer during cornering, it can dial in more lockup to stabilize the car.
Shortcomings
-As with a conventional limited-slip diff, torque is biased toward the slower wheel.

Torque-vectoring Differential
--What It Does
-Using additional geartrains to overdrive the half-shafts, torque-vectoring differentials fine-tune the torque delivered to each drive wheel. This produces a yaw moment that can slow or quicken the car’s rotation in a corner. Still confused? Read the damn story.
Shortcomings
-Torque-vectoring differentials are heavy, complex, and expensive, and inflict a slight fuel-economy penalty.

Grom Scrambler Concept Bikes: You Had Us at Knobby Tires, Honda
Honda’s Grom, a 7/8ths-scale 125-cc motorcycle that retails for $3349, is perhaps our favorite bike in the company’s stable right now. It’s cheap, it’s slow, and, most important, it’s the perfect bike for beginners. That it looks absolutely awesome with its stripped-down, mini-sportbike countenance is a bonus. But what if you’re into something a bit more . . . scrambled? Lucky you, because Honda is bringing two specially outfitted Groms to the 2015 Tokyo auto show.

Dubbed Grom50 Scrambler Concept-One and Grom50 Scrambler Concept-Two, both are tricked out to resemble so-called “scrambler” bikes (Ducati actually sells a bike by the same name that follows the same formula), which means they have a semblance of off-road ability. Words cannot describe how badly we want Honda to actually sell these.

Although similar in concept, Scrambler Concept-One is slightly different from Scrambler Concept-Two. The first is painted silver, but retains the standard Grom’s gold-colored suspension forks, and also wears neat “3” numbering, a smattering of chrome pieces, and the aforementioned knobby off-road tires.
-The Scrambler Concept-Two, on the other hand, gets a seemingly Anglo-inspired tan-and-green color scheme and more traditional centralized gauge cluster in place of the One’s off-center piece. In fact, the gauge clusters—really just neat digital tachometers with other info stuffed into its center—are special; the regular Grom has a digital unit, too, but it’s not color, and nor does it look this cool. Not only are the tachs among our favorite features of the concept bikes, they’re also different from Scrambler to Scrambler, with a sort of future-racer look adorning the One’s and a more traditional, lower-key style for the Two.

So far, the standard Grom has been a runaway success here in the States. As with any wheeled product, however, keeping things fresh is critical, so we hope Honda is at least thinking about using these concepts as starting points for the first special-edition Groms. Honda’s U.S. motorcycle website so far only lists 2015 Grom models, which received new color schemes relative to the 2014s—these would make fine additions to the 2016 lineup! Do it, Honda!

VW Consolidates U.S., Canada, Mexico into North America Region, Ex-Skoda Chief To Be CEO
As part of the continuing fallout from its diesel-emissions cheating scandal, Volkswagen is doing some housecleaning and some reorganizing. The company already has broomed several top engineers, and CEO Martin Winterkorn has stepped down. Now come changes that directly affect our side of the pond.
-Volkswagen is consolidating its United States, Mexico, and Canada operations under a single umbrella, in a move that it describes as “decentralization.” Taking the role of president and CEO of the newly formed Volkswagen North America is Dr. Winfried Vahland. Michael Horn remains president and CEO of Volkswagen in America.
-Vahland comes to his new position from Škoda, where he led the brand; he previously headed the China region. He started at the Volkswagen Group with Audi in 1990.

2016 Buick Cascada Priced, and Priced Rather Smartly at That
-Were Chrysler’s 200 convertible, the very standard for four-seat, front-drive convertibles, still alive today, you can bet it’d have tears cascading from its amorphous, blank headlights. That Chrysler would be feeling the pinch from Buick, which just released prices for the four-seat, front-drive 2016 Cascada convertible. Starting just $50 above the 2014 200 convertible’s base price (that was the droptop 200’s final model year), the Buick is not only a far more modern and better-looking piece, but it’s also way better equipped.
If it seems strange that we’re comparing the Cascada to a deceased Chrysler that was once the staple of rental fleets throughout the Sunbelt, the comparison only serves to highlight the Cascada’s near-total lack of direct competition. With the Chrysler entrant to the affordable-convertible marketplace gone, the Buick is left to seek attention in a space vast enough to include Mazda’s MX-5 Miata, the Volkswagen Beetle convertible, and the topless versions of the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro. So it’s a good thing that the Cascada starts at a reasonable $33,990, especially given how it’s chasing the sort of upscale but mid-luxury buyers previously targeted by the Volkswagen Eos (dead), Lexus IS C (basically dead), and the Volvo C70 (ultra-mega dead), and still chased after by the decidedly richer BMW 2-series droptop and the Audi A3 cabriolet.

In fact, Buick seems to have set its sights solely on the Audi, a car which the Cascada undercuts on price by $3535 while laying on more standard equipment. The Buick comes with a 200-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, 20-inch wheels, a seven-inch touch-screen infotainment system, a backup camera, remote engine starting, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, heated front seats and steering wheel, and HID headlights and LED taillights. The base Audi lacks leather, the heated seats and wheel, remote engine starting, and the HID headlights.

Moving past the Audi, the Buick has more stuff included than either the base Ford Mustang convertible or the more premium EcoBoost variant—and way more included for less than the base price of a BMW 228i convertible. Stepping up to the Cascada Premium ($36,990) adds even more content, from safety gear like forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic headlights, and front and rear parking sensors to rain-sensing wipers, front and rear wind deflectors, and different 20-inch wheels.
-To the sort of folks shopping for a roofless cruiser, these are things that could help Buick get noticed. We’ve driven the Opel version of the Cascada and found it entirely pleasant and even a little sporty—and Buick’s strategy of taking that same stylish, premium-feeling car and selling it in the U.S. with an attractive price seems wise. Now only time will tell how the shrinking convertible marketplace responds. And with that, may the Chrysler 200 convertible never be invoked again.

Ferrari’s Faux Leather: We Explore the Latest Custom Option from Maranello
The words “Ferrari” and “fake” often are found in close proximity, but the word “Fiero” usually is part of the equation, too. Yet after slipping inside a grigio-on-blue California T at the recent Frankfurt auto show, we found ourselves thinking about fakery—in terms of the upholstery. That’s because the car wasn’t lined with the delicate, super-smooth hides typical of Maranello, but rather a new material that’s just now appearing on order sheets.

In the same way that automakers shun real suede in favor of microfiber textiles to create longer-lasting, fade-free surfaces in their sportiest models, Ferrari’s new Mycro Prestige upholstery aims to deliver a superior experience, and it’s perhaps the most convincing faux leather in the business. Ferrari quietly installed it on a custom F12berlinetta earlier this year, as well as on another California T displayed at Goodwood, but we hadn’t heard a peep about it until we spoke with Andrea Bassi, Ferrari’s head of personalization.

Why would anyone trade the company’s famously soft aniline leather for a synthetic? For one reason, it’s water repellent, which makes top-down motoring in, say, Seattle or the U.K. more worry-free. Like MB-Tex, the long-serving Mercedes-Benz upholstery that looks and feels like standard Mercedes leather, Mycro Prestige won’t fade or crack over time. That means it keeps looking fresh for Ferrari owners who drive regularly, especially important for California T owners, since it’s the current Ferrari car most likely to be chosen for commuting duty. The material also is flameproof, although anyone occupying a Ferrari in which that quality is being put to the test should probably exit the car immediately. Customers, Bassi says, “want something different from the leather,” he said. “Everyone has a special taste.”

Among the latest of 150 catalog items available through the Tailor Made personalization program, Mycro Prestige is supple and rich, and its look is uniform with none of the rubbery texture one might associate with synthetic leather. It’s produced exclusively by an Italian supplier. Indeed, the intricately stitched and ribbed upholstery in the show car fooled nearly every eye and finger in Frankfurt, and even the black trim on the doors and dash is made from the same stuff. But Ferrari hasn’t gone New Age-y or decided to kowtow to PETA; a California T buyer simply asked the company for a “sportier” version of its classic leather, Bassi said, and so it was done.
