Honda’s Grom, a 7/8ths-scale 125-cc motorcycle that retails for $3349, is perhaps our favorite bike in the company’s stable right now. It’s cheap, it’s slow, and, most important, it’s the perfect bike for beginners. That it looks absolutely awesome with its stripped-down, mini-sportbike countenance is a bonus. But what if you’re into something a bit more . . . scrambled? Lucky you, because Honda is bringing two specially outfitted Groms to the 2015 Tokyo auto show.

Dubbed Grom50 Scrambler Concept-One and Grom50 Scrambler Concept-Two, both are tricked out to resemble so-called “scrambler” bikes (Ducati actually sells a bike by the same name that follows the same formula), which means they have a semblance of off-road ability. Words cannot describe how badly we want Honda to actually sell these.

Although similar in concept, Scrambler Concept-One is slightly different from Scrambler Concept-Two. The first is painted silver, but retains the standard Grom’s gold-colored suspension forks, and also wears neat “3” numbering, a smattering of chrome pieces, and the aforementioned knobby off-road tires.

The Scrambler Concept-Two, on the other hand, gets a seemingly Anglo-inspired tan-and-green color scheme and more traditional centralized gauge cluster in place of the One’s off-center piece. In fact, the gauge clusters—really just neat digital tachometers with other info stuffed into its center—are special; the regular Grom has a digital unit, too, but it’s not color, and nor does it look this cool. Not only are the tachs among our favorite features of the concept bikes, they’re also different from Scrambler to Scrambler, with a sort of future-racer look adorning the One’s and a more traditional, lower-key style for the Two.

So far, the standard Grom has been a runaway success here in the States. As with any wheeled product, however, keeping things fresh is critical, so we hope Honda is at least thinking about using these concepts as starting points for the first special-edition Groms. Honda’s U.S. motorcycle website so far only lists 2015 Grom models, which received new color schemes relative to the 2014s—these would make fine additions to the 2016 lineup! Do it, Honda!

Volkswagen is consolidating its United States, Mexico, and Canada operations under a single umbrella, in a move that it describes as “decentralization.” Taking the role of president and CEO of the newly formed Volkswagen North America is Dr. Winfried Vahland. Michael Horn remains president and CEO of Volkswagen in America.

Vahland comes to his new position from Škoda, where he led the brand; he previously headed the China region. He started at the Volkswagen Group with Audi in 1990.

2016 Buick Cascada Priced, and Priced Rather Smartly at That

-Were Chrysler’s 200 convertible, the very standard for four-seat, front-drive convertibles, still alive today, you can bet it’d have tears cascading from its amorphous, blank headlights. That Chrysler would be feeling the pinch from Buick, which just released prices for the four-seat, front-drive 2016 Cascada convertible. Starting just $50 above the 2014 200 convertible’s base price (that was the droptop 200’s final model year), the Buick is not only a far more modern and better-looking piece, but it’s also way better equipped.

If it seems strange that we’re comparing the Cascada to a deceased Chrysler that was once the staple of rental fleets throughout the Sunbelt, the comparison only serves to highlight the Cascada’s near-total lack of direct competition. With the Chrysler entrant to the affordable-convertible marketplace gone, the Buick is left to seek attention in a space vast enough to include Mazda’s MX-5 Miata, the Volkswagen Beetle convertible, and the topless versions of the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro. So it’s a good thing that the Cascada starts at a reasonable $33,990, especially given how it’s chasing the sort of upscale but mid-luxury buyers previously targeted by the Volkswagen Eos (dead), Lexus IS C (basically dead), and the Volvo C70 (ultra-mega dead), and still chased after by the decidedly richer BMW 2-series droptop and the Audi A3 cabriolet.

In fact, Buick seems to have set its sights solely on the Audi, a car which the Cascada undercuts on price by $3535 while laying on more standard equipment. The Buick comes with a 200-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, 20-inch wheels, a seven-inch touch-screen infotainment system, a backup camera, remote engine starting, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, heated front seats and steering wheel, and HID headlights and LED taillights. The base Audi lacks leather, the heated seats and wheel, remote engine starting, and the HID headlights.

The words “Ferrari” and “fake” often are found in close proximity, but the word “Fiero” usually is part of the equation, too. Yet after slipping inside a grigio-on-blue California T at the recent Frankfurt auto show, we found ourselves thinking about fakery—in terms of the upholstery. That’s because the car wasn’t lined with the delicate, super-smooth hides typical of Maranello, but rather a new material that’s just now appearing on order sheets.

In the same way that automakers shun real suede in favor of microfiber textiles to create longer-lasting, fade-free surfaces in their sportiest models, Ferrari’s new Mycro Prestige upholstery aims to deliver a superior experience, and it’s perhaps the most convincing faux leather in the business. Ferrari quietly installed it on a custom F12berlinetta earlier this year, as well as on another California T displayed at Goodwood, but we hadn’t heard a peep about it until we spoke with Andrea Bassi, Ferrari’s head of personalization.

Why would anyone trade the company’s famously soft aniline leather for a synthetic? For one reason, it’s water repellent, which makes top-down motoring in, say, Seattle or the U.K. more worry-free. Like MB-Tex, the long-serving Mercedes-Benz upholstery that looks and feels like standard Mercedes leather, Mycro Prestige won’t fade or crack over time. That means it keeps looking fresh for Ferrari owners who drive regularly, especially important for California T owners, since it’s the current Ferrari car most likely to be chosen for commuting duty. The material also is flameproof, although anyone occupying a Ferrari in which that quality is being put to the test should probably exit the car immediately. Customers, Bassi says, “want something different from the leather,” he said. “Everyone has a special taste.”

Among the latest of 150 catalog items available through the Tailor Made personalization program, Mycro Prestige is supple and rich, and its look is uniform with none of the rubbery texture one might associate with synthetic leather. It’s produced exclusively by an Italian supplier. Indeed, the intricately stitched and ribbed upholstery in the show car fooled nearly every eye and finger in Frankfurt, and even the black trim on the doors and dash is made from the same stuff. But Ferrari hasn’t gone New Age-y or decided to kowtow to PETA; a California T buyer simply asked the company for a “sportier” version of its classic leather, Bassi said, and so it was done.
